Tough Fire Fighter Competition Coming June 7 to New Mexico
April 9, 2008 – The SCOTT Fire Fighter Combat Challenge, held is
25 locations and broadcast on ESPN, will stop in Carlsbad, New Mexico, at the
Permian Basin Regional Training Center on June 7, 2008. More than 80
challengers/competitors from as far away as Canada are expected to compete.
“ESPN dubbed it the toughest two minutes in sports because most
fire fighters complete the series of tasks in two minutes,” says Robert Sanchez,
president of Carlsbad Local 1687. “It is definitely an exciting sight to see and
we’re proud to be hosting the event for our second consecutive year.”
Challengers must compete in full bunker gear and the SCOTT
Air-Pak breathing apparatus. Each competitor performs a series of five tasks,
including climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and
rescuing a life-sized “victim.” The fire fighter with the best time wins.
