World Police & Fire Games Scheduled for New York City in 2011

November 29, 2006 – After a successful bid by a committee representing New York City fire fighters and police officers, the World Police & Fire Games are scheduled to take place in the Big Apple August 26-September 5, 2011. The event includes 10 days of sports competitions and other activities throughout the City’s five boroughs.

“The 2011 games will respectfully coincide with the 10-year remembrance of September 11, 2001,” says Jim Carney, president and CEO of the 2011 World Police & Fire Games and a retired member of Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) of New York Local 94. “We are expecting between 15,000 and 20,000 full-time fire fighters and law enforcement personnel from 70 countries.”

With an event of this magnitude, planning and fundraising have already begun. The second annual World Police & Fire Games Dinner will be held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center January 11, 2007.

The World Police & Fire Games began in 1985 and have been held every two years since, each time in a different city. The event is open to active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel worldwide. In 2007, the World Police & Fire Games will be staged in Adelaide, South Australia, in British Columbia in 2009.

The 2011 World Police & Fire Games and Memorial Inc. has been established as a registered non-profit, 501c (3), to organize the events in New York City. Staff consists of active and retired police officers and fire fighters.
