Alabama Fire Fighters Help Elect New Mayor
March
13, 2009 – With the endorsement and campaign support from Montgomery, AL Local
1444, Todd Strange recently became the City’s new mayor with 53 percent of the
vote. A special election was called after the incumbent mayor, Bobby Bright,
vacated his seat after being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
When it came to supporting a candidate, Local 1444 President
Ronnie Howard Bozeman, Jr., said the choice was obvious. “We sent Strange a
questionnaire to determine how he stood on issues important to fire fighters,”
says Bozeman. “He answered all questions well.”
According to Strange’s answers, the new mayor supports
recognizing Local 1444 as a bargaining unit and allowing union business to be
discussed in the fire houses. Strange has also agreed to an open-door policy.
For the campaign, Montgomery fire fighters worked the phone
banks and accompanied the candidate as he went door-to-door to discuss the
issues.
After voters went to the polls, Strange came away with the
highest percentage of votes. “We are very pleased with the outcome of this
campaign,” says Bozeman. “We are looking forward to working with him to make
Montgomery a better, safer place to work.”
Strange is a proven leader in the community with 37 years of
business experience and two terms on the Montgomery County Commission.
