INSTRUCTOR APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
IAFF CANADIAN HazMat-CBRN Training Initiative
The International Association of Fire
Fighters (IAFF) Canadian Office is currently accepting applications to
become an IAFF hazardous materials and CBRN Master Instructor. Qualified and
union-active members are encouraged to apply.
We’re looking for trainers who are dynamic individuals who know how to
captivate a class and get a message across. We’re looking for the ‘best of
the best.’
Prospective applicants should have no less
than five years of active hazardous materials and CBRN experience.
Applicants should possess a minimum Operations Level skills and knowledge.
This will include expert knowledge and skill in the use of the Emergency
Response Guide (ERG), NIOSH Pocket Guide, placard and container recognition,
hazard identification, risk/benefit analysis, defensive operations, and
incident command.
Selected applicants will be appointed by
General President Harold A. Schaitberger and will take part in the IAFF
Canadian HazMat/CBRN Training Initiative as funded in whole by the
Government of Canada.
Application Procedures
To apply for an IAFF Instructor
position, the following items are required:
Current Resume detailing level of
experience and teaching background
Video (tape/DVD) of applicant teaching
students
Letter of recommendation from
applicant’s IAFF Local President

The selection of IAFF Instructor is
extremely competitive. The video is a critical component of the selection
process. Specifically, the video should demonstrate the applicant’s ability
to facilitate a class of 16 to 24 students, work with small groups, debrief
an exercise and promote student participation.
Following receipt of application, the IAFF
Canadian Office will review the materials and videos to ensure that
candidates possess the essential facilitation skills. If qualified,
recommendations are then sent to General President Schaitberger for review
and discussion. After the review, the General President selects and appoints
candidates as an IAFF Master Instructor.
If appointed by General President
Schaitberger to become an IAFF Instructor, you will receive an invitation to
the annual Instructor Development Conference.
IAFF Instructor Requirements
Instructors are expected to:
Teach a minimum of four times per year to
remain conversant with IAFF programs and teaching methods.
Attend the annual Instructor Development
Conference.
