INSTRUCTOR APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

IAFF CANADIAN HazMat-CBRN Training Initiative

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Canadian Office is currently accepting applications to become an IAFF hazardous materials and CBRN Master Instructor. Qualified and union-active members are encouraged to apply.

We’re looking for trainers who are dynamic individuals who know how to captivate a class and get a message across. We’re looking for the ‘best of the best.’

Prospective applicants should have no less than five years of active hazardous materials and CBRN experience. Applicants should possess a minimum Operations Level skills and knowledge. This will include expert knowledge and skill in the use of the Emergency Response Guide (ERG), NIOSH Pocket Guide, placard and container recognition, hazard identification, risk/benefit analysis, defensive operations, and incident command.

Selected applicants will be appointed by General President Harold A. Schaitberger and will take part in the IAFF Canadian HazMat/CBRN Training Initiative as funded in whole by the Government of Canada.

Application Procedures

To apply for an IAFF Instructor position, the following items are required:

 Current Resume detailing level of experience and teaching background

 Video (tape/DVD) of applicant teaching students

 Letter of recommendation from applicant’s IAFF Local President

The above information should be sent to:

Jim Lee, Assistant to the General President
International Association of Fire Fighters - Canadian Office
350 Sparks Street, Suite 403
Ottawa, ON KIR 7S8

The selection of IAFF Instructor is extremely competitive. The video is a critical component of the selection process. Specifically, the video should demonstrate the applicant’s ability to facilitate a class of 16 to 24 students, work with small groups, debrief an exercise and promote student participation.

Following receipt of application, the IAFF Canadian Office will review the materials and videos to ensure that candidates possess the essential facilitation skills. If qualified, recommendations are then sent to General President Schaitberger for review and discussion. After the review, the General President selects and appoints candidates as an IAFF Master Instructor.

If appointed by General President Schaitberger to become an IAFF Instructor, you will receive an invitation to the annual Instructor Development Conference.

IAFF Instructor Requirements

Instructors are expected to:

 Teach a minimum of four times per year to remain conversant with IAFF programs and teaching methods.
