Funding for SAFER and AFG                           Click here for information on
                                                                                  the new SAFER rules

Adequately staffed, equipped and trained fire departments
are critical to fire fighter and public safety.  Yet, two-thirds of fire departments are understaffed, and many local departments have significant equipment and training shortfalls.  Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants can help fire departments hire additional fire fighters, ensuring that they have sufficient numbers of adequately trained personnel to respond to emergency situations quickly and safely, while Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG) can help departments purchase critically needed equipment and training, as well as implement health and wellness programs to ensure fire fighter safety.

In Fiscal Year 2010, Congress appropriated $420 million for the SAFER, and $390 million for AFG.

In his Fiscal Year 2011 budget proposal, President Obama recommended funding SAFER and AFG at $305 million each.  The IAFF supports funding each program at $420 million.
