National Security Personnel System
Federal fire fighters play an essential
role in protecting the vital interests of the United States, and
face some of the most difficult and hazardous working conditions in
the country, including protecting our nation's military
installations.
Working together with 36 other unions under the umbrella of the
United DoD Workers Coalition (UDWC), the IAFF won congressional
approval of a plan to restructure the National Security Personnel
System (NSPS) and restore collective bargaining and appeal rights
for DoD fire fighters and their civilian counterparts.
In September 2008, DoD issued final regulations to implement
NSPS. DoD has indicated that the final regulations will apply only to
bargaining units formed after conversion to NSPS. The IAFF will continue to
work with the coalition to protect the collective bargaining rights of DoD
workers.
