Sarcoidosis
What Causes Sarcoidosis?
Sarcoidosis is currently thought to be associated with an abnormal
immune response. Whether a foreign substance is the trigger; whether
that trigger is a chemical, drug, virus or other substance; and how
exactly the immune disturbance is caused remain unknown. Sarcoidosis
may be one common end-point caused by multiple different triggers.
Researchers supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute and other organizations are trying to solve these
mysteries. Among the research questions they are trying to answer
are:
• Does sarcoidosis have many causes, or does a single agent produce
it?
• In which body organ does sarcoidosis start?
• How does sarcoidosis is spread form one part of the body to
another?
• Do heredity and/or environment play a role in the appearance,
severity, or time-course of the disease?
• How can sarcoidosis be prevented?
