Use the IAFF Menu Planner for Your Fire Station Meals

The IAFF Fit to Survive Menu Planner continues to be updated and features simple, healthy meals that you can prepare on the job.  The menu planner also helps you plan ahead for each day, week and month, and includes recipes with complete nutrition information.  Each day's meals add up to approximately 2,200 calories.  Additionally, a “Portion Distortion” feature helps you control portions and avoid unnecessary calories.

In addition to the Menu Planner, the Fit to Survive web site offers expert advice and practical information on staying fit and healthy, with special emphasis on how to follow a healthy diet to help reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases.

Kevin Rose, Engineer/Paramedic from Marin County, CA Fire Department and member of Local 1775, uses the menu planner both at the station and at home.  He explains, “For fire fighters, heart disease is our-number one killer.  This menu planner provides a way to eat wholesome, delicious meals on and off the job.”

At the station it can be somewhat of a challenge to find something to eat that will please everyone.   “We have six people trying to agree on one thing to eat,” explains Rose.  “We have to consider likes and dislikes, food allergies and the ‘I just had that last night at home’ issues.  It’s very difficult to prepare a meal we will all eat.  That is why we use the Fit to Survive Menu Planner.”

The Menu Planner has also helped Rose and the fire fighters on the same shift to choose easy to prepare, nutritious meals that they can all eat.  “Before you know it, our meals are planned for the day,” continues Rose.  “The food tastes great and the directions are so easy that even the rookies can follow them,” Rose quips.

Rose’s family has benefited from the Menu Planner as well.  “Because the Menu Planner is online and available at home, it helps my family plan our weekly shopping list.  We don't follow it day to day, but it does help stir up ideas for what to eat that the whole family can enjoy," he says.  “The kids especially like the ice cream nights.”

Rose encourages other IAFF members to use the Menu Planner.  “The next time you are stuck trying to decide what to eat, go to the Menu Planner.  It helps our shift and it could help plan your next healthy meal.”

He adds, “The best part is that it gives you the portion sizes to eat while supplying you with a 2,000+ calorie a day meal plan.”

The Menu Planner is available on the Fit to Survive web site at www.iaff.org/HS/FTS/ftsdefault.asp.
