Your department may already have safety officers – designated first responders who ensure overall safety at the firehouse and on a scene. The safety officers and your infections control officer will be the first line of defense for policies your department makes to address the pandemic.

Safety Officers/Infection Control Officer Checklist:

Before a pandemic ensure:

• The station provides a safe work environment
• A sufficient level of equipment and supplies
• Everyone is properly fitted for equipment
• Everyone is using proper equipment when they should

After an incident:

• Report health incidents to health center
• Make sure everyone is following incident-related
  decontamination guidelines
• Follow administrative and PPE controls
• Complete an exposure report
