Contra Costa Local Defends Fire Fighters of
Shorter Stature
June 23, 2009 – Contra Costa County, CA Local 1230 is
encouraging fire fighters across Northern California to attend the June 25 fire
district meeting to speak out against a Rodeo-Hercules Fire District board
member for questioning the ability of 5'2" women to be fire fighters. Bill
Prather, who told Contra Costa County Local 1230 President Vince Wells that
female fire fighters under 5’2” are unqualified to do the job and “put us all at
risk,” stands to lose his position on the board over the remarks.
“We need a show of support from as many IAFF members as possible, along
with family and friends," says Wells. "These types of statements should not be
tolerated in this day and age.”
