Contra Costa Local Seeks Support From Fire Fighters of
Shorter Stature
June 3, 2009 – Contra Costa County, CA Local 1230 is
encouraging fire fighters across Northern California to attend a June 25 fire
district meeting to speak out against a Rodeo-Hercules Fire District board
member for questioning the ability of 5'2" women to be fire fighters. Bill
Prather, who told Contra Costa County Local 1230 President Vince Wells that
female fire fighters under 5’2” are unqualified to do the job and “put us all at
risk,” stands to lose his position on the board over the remarks.
“It is our intent to have fire fighters there to speak out against these
statements,” says Wells. “We want as many women and fire fighters of shorter
stature as possible there for support.”
