Illinois Fire Fighters Raise Money for Children’s Cancer Research
April 15, 2013 – For the second year, several members of La Grange, IL Local 2338 pledged to shave their heads to help raise money for children’s cancer research. The eight members dubbed themselves the “Baldest and Bravest” and raised $6,720 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
Event participants agreed to register at stbaldricks.org and ask for monetary donations. In return, the fundraisers pledge to have their heads shaved. For this event, Floyds 99 barbers shaved the heads at Palmer Place Restaurant and Biergarten.
Local 2338 fire fighters were also challenged to a friendly competition by another St. Baldrick’s fundraiser. Sadie Madden, a nine-year-old sporting curly red hair, stopped by one of the fire stations with her mom to suggest they compete for bragging rights.
“We knew we were going to be no match for Sadie, but we thought it would be a
fun way to call some extra attention to the cause,” says Local 2338 member Brian
Cramer, event organizer. It did just that and even earned them a spot on a local
television news broadcast
In the end, Sadie earned the bragging rights, raising $10,500 to Local 2338’s $6,720.
