World Trade Center Steel Travels I-95 to Florida December 2-4
November 30, 2010 -- A piece of World Trade Center steel will be escorted by
Palm Beach County, FL Local 2928 fire fighters and Palm Beach County Sheriff's
Deputies from New York City to Wellington, Florida, December 2-4. Once the steel
finishes its trip down I-95, it will become a permanent part of the Patriot
Memorial, which will be dedicated on September 11, 2011, in Wellington.
A GPS monitor will be attached to the steel and can be tracked from
www.wellingtonfl.gov as soon as the steel departs. “My hope is that my brother
and sister fire fighters will track the steel and line the roadsides and
overpasses as we travel through their home towns,” says Local 2928 member and
Wellington Vice Mayor Matt Willhite. “I can’t think of a better way to honor and
salute our fallen brothers.”
The beam was an exterior column panel formerly located in the South Tower, seven
floors below where United Airlines flight 175 made impact on September 11, 2001.
The 10-ton beam will be the centerpiece of the Patriot Memorial located in front
of City Hall.
Wellington's Patriot Memorial is funded through a private/public partnership
with the non-profit Wellington Community Foundation. Donations are being
