Long Beach Fire Fighters Bring Christmas to Underprivileged Kids
November 16, 2010 – Long Beach, CA Local 372 fire fighters are now accepting
donations for their annual “Spark of Love” Toy Drive. The drive began in the
early 1950s and provides Christmas toys to approximately 400 families each year.
Families are chosen based on recommendations by local school district teachers,
fire fighters and other community citizens.
Donations of new, unwrapped, toys, sports equipment, school supplies or gift
cards are accepted until Christmas Day. These items can be dropped off at any
local area fire station, CVS Pharmacy and City Hall.
Toys are delivered throughout the month of December, but fire fighters make
three special delivery days. On CODE 3 delivery day, fire fighters parade
throughout the City with Santa in a fire engine sleigh, several fire trucks,
police cars and elves passing out toys. On another day, families hit especially
hard by tragedy are invited for a special day at the Aquarium of the Pacific. On
Christmas Day, fire fighters deliver gifts to children at the Salvation Army.
Monetary donations are also accepted with checks payable to Friends of Long
Beach Firefighters Spark of Love Charity.
