Naperville Fire Fighters to Donate $7,000 to Cancer Charity
September
9, 2010 – After hosting a successful wellness fair and fundraiser, Naperville,
IL Local 4302 fire fighters will donate $7,000 to the
Edward Hospital Women’s Cancer
Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
“We are very pleased with the response from the community,” says
Local 4302 President Richard Sander. “Because of their support, we are able to
do our part to support cancer treatment and research.”
The idea for the event came after Local 4302 member Chris
Brazzale heard about the “Guardians of the Ribbon” nonprofit charity
organization, a group of fire fighters and police officers who maintain a fleet
of pink fire trucks for events to raise awareness and dollars for women’s cancer
charities.
“My mother passed away 25 years ago from breast cancer,” says
Brazzale. “This is my way of getting invovled and giving back.”
For the event, the Guardians of the Ribbon drove four pink fire
trucks into Naperville. Cancer survivors were encouraged to write messages with
permanent markers about their personal battles with the disease onto the fire
trucks.
Additionally, fire fighters set up free blood pressure checks,
secured speakers and provided health information. For the kids, there were pink
balloons, pink plastic fire helmets, popcorn, pink snow cones, pink cotton candy
and pink lemonade.
All proceeds benefit Edward Hospital Women’s Cancer Foundation
and the American Cancer Society.
