June
22, 2010 –One IAFF member and two children of IAFF members have been awarded
Union Plus Scholarships. Tuscon, AZ Local 479 member Brian Delfs, Bridget
Anderson (daughter of Port Huron, MI Local 354 fire fighter Kevin Anderson) and
Robert Irving Jr. (son of Beaumont, TX Local 399 fire fighter Robert Irving)
rose above some tough competition to receive the scholarships.
More than 5,000 applications were submitted from students
representing all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada. Scholarships are awarded
based on academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of
labor.
“The IAFF congratulates all of this year’s scholarship
recipients,” says IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. “I know they will
do well as they pursue their academic goals.”
All three awardees are serving or are planning to serve their
community in some way. Anderson plans to pursue a career in political advocacy.
Delfs has been an IAFF member and officer for more than two decades and hopes to
continue supporting the labor movement by running for political office. Irving
says community service has been instilled in him by three generations of union
members in his family. He is pursuing a mechanical engineering degree.
Union Plus was created by the AFL-CIO to offer consumer benefits
to union members and their families. For more information,
