Weather Dampens Idaho Fire Fighters Fill-the-Boot Efforts
June 2, 2010 – After Boise, Idaho Mayor Dave Bieter proclaimed
May 21 and 22, 2010, Treasure Valley Fill-the-Boot Days, Boise Local 149 and
Gowen Field Local 4571 fire fighters planned to be out in full force, trying to
beat last year’s totals. But, Mother Nature had other ideas.
The area was drenched with 1.4 inches of rain. ”It was the most
rain any of us had seen in 15 years,” says Boise Local 149 MDA Coordinator Mike
Menlove. “We are pleased with our $35,000 total, but we are disappointed we
weren’t closer to last year’s $50,000 total.”
Gowen Field Local 4571 MDA Coordinator Bob Hunt says Local
4571’s totals were down too. “We are a small local of just 12 members, but we
still make it a priority to get out and fill the boot for MDA. We only collected
about a fourth of what we usually get, so we are looking into the possibility of
adding more Fill-the-Boot Days.”
While both locals participate in Fill-the-Boot drives every year
because of their dedication to MDA and its mission, they also say it is a good
opportunity to unite the community. “This is the kind of event that brings area
residents together for a good cause,” says Menlove.
He adds, “The event also enables us to build positive
relationships with our area decision-makers. Last year, the governor issued the
Fill-the-Boot Days proclamation. This year it was the mayor.”
All of the collected donations will be kept in Southern Idaho
where the money will help fund medical clinics, support groups, summer camp and
medical equipment for area families.
