Ontario Fire Fighters Send Young Burn Survivors to Camp

December 23, 2009 – Four young burn survivors will have the opportunity to attend Camp Bucko, a special camp for children aged 7-17 with burn injuries, thanks to the generous fundraising efforts of Oshawa, ON Local 465 fire fighters.

In conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, Local 465 fire fighters hosted an open house at their newest fire station. The fun, family event included fire hose target practice, a fire safety house, high angle rescue and vehicle extrication demonstrations and a junior fire fighter combat challenge.

To raise money, fire fighters also organized a silent auction and barbeque. All proceeds – some $5,935 – will go toward Camp Bucko tuitions. With that amount, four children will be able to attend tuition free.

In addition to donating money, fire fighters often serve as counselors to help camp organizers keep the goal of having a 1:1 counselor-to-camper ratio. Click here  to learn more about the camp.
