Connecticut Local’s Reflective Signs Benefit Charity
April 2, 2009 – As night falls, it becomes increasingly
difficult for East Hartford, CT Local 1548 fire fighters to see address numbers
posted on homes. To help them find homes faster, 1548 created a reflective sign
campaign that also helps raise money for local charities.
Citizens can submit applications for the reflective signs to
Local 1548, which the fire fighters obtain from the Public Works Department and
then etch address numbers onto the aluminum-based signs.

“The signs are made of a reflective material that can be seen
from all angles, so they are easier to see when we answer nighttime emergency
calls,” says Rich Littell, a member of Local 1548 and the program co-organizer.
After supply costs are subtracted, Local 1548 donates all money
raised to local charities. To date, the local has donated $500 to a community
food bank and another $500 to the Kidsafe Christmas Gift program to help
financially challenged East Hartford families provide Christmas gifts to their
children.
Littell says the address sign program has raised enough money to
donate to another charity, and the local is currently scouting charities to
determine which will receive a donation.
