Off-Duty Maryland Fire Fighter Saves Drowning Man
February
10, 2009 – A disabled Anne Arundel County, Maryland, man is alive today thanks
to the quick reaction of off-duty Prince George’s County, MD Local 1619 fire
fighter Rachael Edney.
Edney was at a waterfront restaurant in Anne Arundel County in
the early morning hours of Sunday, February 1, 2009, when Charles Tesch lost his
balance and fell into the water. One witness tried to rescue Tesch, but was not
able to pull him to safety.
While waiting on emergency crews to arrive, Edney ran to the
scene and jumped into the water. She proceeded to help him to the platform of a
docked boat. Several bystanders jumped onto the boat and helped Tesch onto the
pier where he was cared for by Anne Arundel County Local 1563 fire fighters and
paramedics.
“Edney’s commitment to duty and professional training ensured
the safety of this man,” says Doug “Bart” Bartholomew, president of Local 1619.
“She is an equally dedicated union member and an honor to her profession, so I
would expect nothing less. We are very proud of her.”
Tesch was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma
Center for treatment. Edney was not injured in the rescue.
