27, 2009 – Virginia hockey teams the Bravest and the Finest went head-to-head at
the Norfolk Scope hockey rink to benefit the Children’s Hospital of the Kings
Daughters, which cares for patients under the age of 18. While money is still
coming in from area sponsors, the current fundraising total is $4,000.
Event organizer and Norfolk, VA Local 68 Glen Williams says fire
fighters and police wanted to participate to help the kids. The hospital says
that it could not have come at a better time.
“The recession has prevented many of the hospital’s regular
donors from contributing this year,” says Williams. “They are down several
hundred thousand dollars. Any little bit helps.”
Nine-hundred tickets were sold for the charity event, which
pitted Virginia fire fighters against police in a two-period hockey game. The
fire fighter team was comprised of members of Local 68, Chesapeake Local 2449
and Virginia Beach Local 2924.
At the end of the first period, the two teams seemed evenly
matched at a 3-3 tie. But, the fire fighters stepped up their game to win 10-3.
The Norfolk Scope, where the event was held, is home to the
Norfolk Admirals, an NHL farm team for the Tampa Bay Lightening.
