California Fire Fighter Rides 525 Miles for Arthritis Research
September 24, 2008 – Marin, CA Local 1775 member Mark Tracey is biking his
way from San Francisco to Los Angeles, California – 525 miles – as part of the
California Coast Classic Bicycle Tour to raise money and awareness for The
Arthritis Foundation.
The 240 participating cyclists left on September 20, 2008, and are expected
to arrive in Los Angeles on September 27.
“My inspiration is the friends and family who have been affected by
arthritis, which can be very debilitating,” says Tracey. “And Local 1775 has
been so supportive. As we were leaving San Francisco, heading toward Sausalito,
a handful of engine companies were waiting to cheer us on and see us off.”
Each cyclist is required to raise a minimum of $2,950. Tracey has already
exceeded that minimum with a total of $3,195. Donations on Tracey’s behalf will
be accepted through October 31, 2008.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, early 46 million Americans currently
suffer from the condition. New projections predict that the number of people
with arthritis will almost double by the year 2020.
The Arthritis
Foundation devotes more than $11 million annually to research new,
successful treatments. The Arthritis Foundation also makes a difference in the
lives of those affected by arthritis by providing programs that help them and
their families better understand and cope with the disease.
