July 28, 2008 – Two days after a family in the Town of Southwest Ranches, Florida, lost their home in a fire, the Town Council approved construction of a new fire station.

Broward County, FL Local 4321 fire fighters respond to Southwest Ranches. “This fire could have had more dire consequences,” says Walt Dix, president of Local 4321. “The Town Council realized that. With this additional fire station, Broward County fire fighters will be better positioned to respond quickly and efficiently to the town’s fires and emergencies.”

The family was away from home when the house caught fire. Fortunately, a passerby saw the smoke and flames and called 9-1-1. By the time Broward County fire fighters arrived, the flames were already coming out of the front windows and through the roof.

With 31 fire fighters on scene, Local 4321 members were able to douse the flames within 30 minutes. Two were treated for minor injuries. The family’s six dogs and two horses were all accounted for and none was hurt.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Meanwhile, the American Red Cross is assisting the family with shelter and basic supplies.
