Florida Local Hosts Month-Long Tribute to 9/11 Anniversary
July 11, 2008 – This year marks the seventh anniversary of the
9/11 terrorist attacks which resulted in the deaths of 343 New York IAFF
members. In Florida, Martin County Local 2959 will conduct a month-long memorial
in September.
“We have wanted to make 9/11 tributes an annual tradition since
it happened,” says Todd Tucker, vice president of Local 2959 and tribute
organizer. “As the years pass, we are concerned that our country’s citizens will
remember less and less. This year, we want to remind all Americans of those
innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor our military who
continue to protect us from future attacks.”
The centerpiece of the month-long dedication is a photography
exhibit “New York
September 11” by the Magnum photography group. The exhibit consists of large
and powerful photographs taken on the morning of September 11. It was originally
shown at the New York Historical Museum. This will be the first and only showing
in Florida.
Fire Department Honor Guards/Color Guards from around the state
will participate in a daily ceremony outside the exhibit. Plans are also in the
works for a large-scale patriotic rally and kick-off parade featuring Florida
and New York City fire fighters.
