Former Boston Fire Fighter Fronts Up and Coming Band
May
5, 2008 – Mike McColgan traded his turnout gear for a microphone nearly four
years ago, but he’s never forgotten about his Boston, MA Local 718 brothers and
sisters or the labor movement. McColgan, the lead singer for the punk band,
Street Dogs, sings about America’s union workers. The band will release its
fourth album, “State of Grace,” on July 8, 2008.
Street Dogs formed in 2002 while McColgan still served as a
Boston fire fighter. As the demands for the band to play live skyrocketed, he
made the decision to leave the fire service.
“I started spending more and more time with the band, and began
to feel like I was doing a disservice to my fellow fire fighters,” says McColgan.
“But I have never stopped supporting my union brothers and sisters.
McColgan says fire fighter friends and supporters show up at his
gigs all of the time. “It’s been amazing,” he adds.
Street Dogs’ music includes “Modern Day Labor Anthem” and
“Unions and the Law.” McColgan says, “We’re not looking to be a supergroup. We
want to focus on the music and keep grounded.”
