Colorado Fire Fighter Races Across Country to Help Kids
March
12, 2008 – Boulder, Colorado Local 900 fire fighter Tim Case is competing in one
of the most challenging bicycle races to raise money to help kids with
congenital heart defects. On behalf of the Team Strong Heart organization, Case
will participate in the 2008 Race Across America in the solo division beginning
June 8, 2008. The event begins in Oceanside, California, and ends 3,100 miles
later in Annapolis, Maryland.
Created in 2006, Team Strong Heart is a collection of bicycle
racers and supporters whose goal is to raise $100,000 for Camp Odayin, a
Minnesota that camp provides residential, day and family camp experiences for
children with congenital heart disease. Campers have an opportunity to meet
others like them and to enjoy supervised athletic, outdoor and creative
activities.
“I heard about this organization from other avid cyclists when I
was living in Minnesota,” says Case. “Even though I don’t personally know anyone
affected by congenital heart disease, I strongly believe in the importance of
this camp and the role it plays in lifting the spirits of these kids.”
Last
year, Case competed as a relay-racer. This year, he’s going solo. He has 10 days
to ride the 3,100 miles across the United States. That breaks down to 20 hours a
day on the bike and two to four hours of sleep each night.
The fire fighter knows he’s facing the challenge of his life,
but he is prepared. The 10-year racing veteran is training regularly and will
have a pit crew of helpers and supplies.
