It’s Never Too Early to Get Hands-on Training

February 27, 2008 – High school students in Glendale, Arizona, know first-hand what it’s like to respond to a plane crash, thanks to the assistance of Glendale fire fighters, also members of Phoenix Local 493.

Mountain Ridge High School offers life sciences classes, including an introduction to EMT class, to students. Glendale fire fighters assist the high school with the planning of a realistic scenario for the class.

Daniel Valenzuela, Glendale trustee for Phoenix, AZ Local 493, explains that fire fighters organized the airline crash simulation, with the high school’s drama students playing the victims.

Fire fighters instructed students on the proper way to respond to a plane crash. Students were then divided into small groups with a fire fighter assigned to each group. Students practiced proper response, from assessing patient injuries to administering treatment.
