Wisconsin Fire Fighter to be Featured on “Escape to the Wild”
June
11, 2007 – Gary Green, a member of Racine, WI Local 321, was selected to appear
on “Escape to the Wild,” a VERSUS television series sponsored by the Theodore
Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP), the IAFF and other AFL-CIO unions.
Green will be featured during the 2008 season.
In May, Green traveled with “Escape to the Wild” host Tom
Ackerman to Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico – located on the Gulf of Mexico off the
Yucatan peninsula, to hunt wild turkey and forest puma.
Green says he applied after seeing an episode of “Escape to the
Wild.” “I liked the show because it is all about the adventure of the hunt,”
explains.
Green
and the “Escape to the Wild” crew began hunting every morning at 5:00 a.m.
“While we were looking for the turkey and puma, we saw a lot of wildlife,”
recalls Green. “Every place we went, there were monkeys, colorful birds of all
shapes and sizes, reptiles and interesting vegetation. It was a sight to see.”
Green tracked turkey by listening to them sing – wild,
oscillated turkeys do not gobble. “We heard the singing stop, then, all of the
sudden, he came down from the tree where he was hiding about 40 yards away, says
Green. “As soon as I had a clear shot, I made my move.”
Green was selected to appear on “Escape to the Wild” because of
his conservation and education efforts. He is the president for the Racine
chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. As a fire fighter, Green also
conducts classroom education on fire safety.
