Fall River Fire Fighters Help Laid-off DPW Workers
The Herald News (12/11/09); Holtzman, Michael
Giving back takes a different twist when one’s a fire fighter,
recalled to the job after a long layoff, but others still need one.
Especially at this time of year. That’s when the Fall River
Firefighters Relief Fund sprang into action, continuing what they’d
been doing this year after 44 of their ranks lost jobs in mid-March.
The “brothers” the young fire fighters said they wanted to help, in
turn, were laid-off Department of Public Works workers, struggling
to make ends meet and enjoy a bit of Christmas.

Man Dies in Fire; City Budget Cuts Blamed
WBAL Baltimore (12/10/09)
Baltimore's fire union has called on Mayor Sheila Dixon to restore
$3.5 million to the City's budget for emergency services, following
the death of a man in a recent early morning fire. Union leaders
said deep budget cuts have put the lives of residents at risk. As a
result of the budget cuts, the fire department has been rotating
closures of fire stations since July. Many fire fighters believe Sam
Davis, 76, would not have died if Truck 18, the closest search and
rescue company to the scene, had been on assignment. Also, Engine 8
was closed. "In this case, many of the members on the fire ground
assured me that if these closings hadn't occurred, there probably
would have been a different outcome," said Baltimore, MD Local 734
President Bob Sledgeski. An investigation will be launched to
determine whether the closed fire station led to delays in the
response to the fire.

New Orleans City Council Raises Tax to Pay Fire Fighters
WWLTV New Orleans (12/07/09)
The New Orleans City Council agreed to raise the citywide property
tax to pay off a court judgment for City fire fighters. The $3
million judgment stems from a decade-old lawsuit. Fire fighters
claimed for years that the City did not give them the required pay
raises. Rolling forward the tax by 1-mil will cost the average
household in the City an additional $15 a year. A judge ordered the
payment to bring retirees into line with current fire fighter
benefits.

Chief Insists on Seeing Medical Records of Firefighters Before
Paying Claims
Medford Transcript (12/10/09); Reid, Matthew
A grievance was filed on behalf of two Medford, Massachusetts, fire
fighters who say they were denied payment for medical injuries
sustained while on the job, according to Rick Jordan, president of
Medford, MA Local 1032. Fire Chief Frank Giliberti has demanded to
see medical test results on the advice of the company that oversees
the department's job-related injury claims. Lt Brian Cronin, one of
the injured fire fighters, said, "The chief's rationale is that he
is entitled to the results of the blood work, which he's not. The
United States Supreme Court even says that the results are private,
between my physician and myself."
