Anti-Worker Bills Move Through Kansas Legislature
February
1, 2013 – The true agenda of the the Kansas state legislature was revealed as it
acts on legislation that would - according to Kansas Chamber of Commerce
lobbyist Eric Stafford -- "get
rid of public sector unions."
One bill seeks to
prevent public employee unions from deducting money from members' pay for
political activity efforts, while
another goes after collective bargaining rights.
IAFF 2nd District Vice President Mark Woolbright notes,
"It's Interesting how, in the state of Kansas, the bill that strips collective
bargaining from public employees is cited as the 'Public Employee Freedom Act.'"
"With state legislatures now convening, IAFF affiliates
face a new round of political attacks," says IAFF General President Harold
Schaitberger. "The legislation in Kansas makes it crystal clear that state
lawmakers across the country want to destroy unions. But I am confident in our
ability to stand up to the challenges and fight back."
