Public Assistance Grants for Fire Departments Impacted by Hurricane Sandy

November 21, 2012 -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing additional financial assistance to help with the recovery efforts of all fire departments in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The Public Assistance (PA) grant program has been approved to assist with the recovery efforts involving critical infrastructures, including fire station damage, lost equipment and vehicles.

IAFF affiliates in the storm region and their fire departments are encouraged to bring department damages and losses to the attention of county and state emergency management officials to begin the PA grant program eligibility review process.

During a recent trip by U.S. Fire Administrator Ernest Mitchell to the impacted areas of Hurricane Sandy, Mitchell was struck by the significant damage done to fire departments, their equipment and stations, and wants to ensure all fire department leaders are aware of the PA grant program and are in contact with local and state emergency management officials to begin a review of department needs.
