October 16, 2012 -- The health care and other contractual benefits of more than 22,000 active and retired United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) members and their families are at extreme risk as a result of the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of Patriot Coal.

This is nothing more than the last act of a long-term scheme by Peabody Energy and Arch Coal to shed themselves of health care and pension obligations to retired miners and widows. Peabody and Arch saddled Patriot with unsustainable liabilities and are attempting to walk away from promises they have made to workers for decades.
