FIRE Act Grant Application Deadline Is September 23 - Apply Now

September 9, 2011 – Time is running out to apply for the Assistance to Firefighters (FIRE Act) grant program! Only more week remains to submit an applications.

The FIRE Act grant application period closes September 23, 2011, at 5:00 p.m. EST. Funding is available for apparatus, fire station modifications, equipment, training, PPE and health and wellness programs, including the IAFF Fire Ground Survival Train-the-Trainer (TtT) program.

Applications are lagging and departments are strongly encouraged to submit applications.

The IAFF is available to assist and will review applications for IAFF affiliates and their fire departments before the final online submission. Submit your applications as soon as possible to grants@iaff.org or call (202) 824-1575.

This is a great opportunity to include in your grant request funding to bring the IAFF Fire Ground Survival MAYDAY prevention and MAYDAY operations training to your fire department. Click here for the Fire Ground Survival Program Grant Guidance. Fire departments are encouraged to apply on a regional basis to make their applications more competitive.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to emphasize the importance of training in the Fiscal Year 2011 program, and has determined that the most benefit is derived from instructor-led, hands-on training that leads to a national or state certification. Therefore, fire fighter safety and survival training, including the IAFF Fire Ground Survival Train-the-Trainer program, has been listed as a high priority in the FIRE Act program. Do not miss this opportunity!

Applications focused on national or state certification training, including TtT initiatives, receive a higher competitive rating. Instructor-led training that requires students to demonstrate their grasp of knowledge of the training material is integral to a certification, and also will receive a high competitive rating.

Proposed training projects that benefit the highest percentage of applicable personnel - such as the IAFF Fire Ground Survival Train-the-Trainer program within a fire department - or that will be open to other departments in the region receive a high competitive advantage.

All costs associated with the delivery of the IAFF Fire Ground Survival Train-the-Trainer program are eligible under the FIRE Act grant program. A fire department can be a host site for up to 30 candidates at a fixed fee of $45,000. As part of this fee, the IAFF will provide durable, fabricated props for Upper Floor Egress, Disentanglement and Reduced/Low Profile Wall Breach. Durable signage for all props and training stations will also be provided. These props and signage will remain the property of the host site. The IAFF will also provide all required training manuals, PowerPoint presentations, instructor notes, videos and additional resource materials.

As part of this fee, IAFF-certified Fire Ground Survival instructors will be registered with the IAFF and will receive all updated training materials and continued information regarding the program.
