IAFF Members Ready to Deploy to Japan
March 11, 2011 – After an earthquake packing a magnitude of 8.9
hit Japan, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)
is dispatching
a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) and has mobilized its partners, the
Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team and the Los Angeles County
Search and Rescue Team. The USAR teams are comprised of IAFF members from
Fairfax, VA Local 2068 and Los Angeles County, CA Local 1014.
The teams will be accompanied by USAID disaster experts who will assist with the
assessments of the disaster.
Exact details on when the teams will deploy have not been determined.
The quake struck about 80 miles off the coast of Miyagi
Prefecture, a mostly rural but still densely populated part of Honshu, Japan's
largest island.
