IAFF Members Ready to Deploy to Japan

March 11, 2011 – After an earthquake packing a magnitude of 8.9 hit Japan, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is dispatching a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) and has mobilized its partners, the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team and the Los Angeles County Search and Rescue Team. The USAR teams are comprised of IAFF members from Fairfax, VA Local 2068 and Los Angeles County, CA Local 1014.

The teams will be accompanied by USAID disaster experts who will assist with the assessments of the disaster.

Exact details on when the teams will deploy have not been determined.

The quake struck about 80 miles off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, a mostly rural but still densely populated part of Honshu, Japan's largest island.
