Canadian Fire Fighters Want Better Standards

October 6, 2010- The Calgary Firefighters Association says fire fighting standards are way below where they should be.

And it wants this to become an election issue. Two polls were conducted for the association. One with its 348 members, along with a telephone survey of about 500 Calgarians. Among the findings, 93 per cent of Calgarians had no idea that Calgary Fire has established a lower standard than the City of Edmonton. The survey also found that about three quarters of Calgarians polled say it's very important to properly invest in emergency services. Fifty per cent polled would be okay with a tax increase in order to maintain programs and services. The association says fire crews need more staff and better gear to do their jobs.
