IAFF Enhances GIS Capabilities

September 21, 2010– The IAFF has introduced a new tool to help affiliates fight station closures and staffing cutbacks. The web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) Coverage Area Assessment Tool is designed for affiliates to produce GIS reports quickly when hit with the threat of station closures, layoffs and other public safety threats.

The online GIS does not replace the more sophisticated GIS evaluation capability provided through IAFF technical assistance, but gives affiliates the ability to demonstrate how budget cuts to fire department resources can affect fire fighters’ ability to safely and effectively protect their communities.

Customized GIS reports provided by the IAFF have been prepared for hundreds of affiliates in the United States and Canada and have been successfully used to prevent station closures and layoffs, as well as expand coverage areas by demonstrating public safety risks.
