IAFF Remembers the 9/11 Fallen
September 11, 2010– Today marks the ninth anniversary of the
September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, DC and
Shanksville, Pennsylvania. On that terrible day, 347 IAFF members, including 343
FDNY fire fighters, lost their lives.
As set forth by “Resolution 9/11: Fire Fighter Day of Remembrance” passed at the
IAFF 2006 Convention, IAFF members are encouraged to solemnly recognize this day
“as a Day of Remembrance for all fire fighters who fall in the line of duty
everywhere.”
“Just three weeks ago, we once again unfurled the ‘Always Remember’ and ‘Never
Forget’ banners during the IAFF Convention in San Diego,” says IAFF General
President Harold Schaitberger. “Each of the lives lost that day was a tragic
loss. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
Immediately after the tragedy, the IAFF raised and distributed more than $160
million to the families of IAFF members and established and continue counseling
services to assist those who served with our fallen and to help them recover.
Today, the IAFF is also remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice at the
2010 IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Service in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
