IAFF Delivers $27.8 Million to MDA
September 7, 2010 – Despite the struggling economy, the public remains
generous for a very worthy cause – the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The
Stars Across America MDA Telethon generated $58.9 million in contributions and
pledges. And, once again, the IAFF earned the spot of top fundraiser,
contributing a total of $27.8 million.
“It is with great pride that I announce the fundraising totals our locals
have accumulated by filling the boot each year,” says IAFF General President
Harold Schaitberger. “I know that with every dollar dropped into a boot, MDA
will be able to provide more services and come one step closer to finding a
cure.”
This year’s top-earning Fill-the-Boot campaign was conducted by Fairfax
County, VA Local 2068 with $561,478. “Of course, it is an honor to have raised
the highest dollar amount, but the thing that we value most is seeing the faces
of the children at MDA camp and the grateful parents who hold out hope that
their child’s disease will one day be cured due to the research that we help
fund,” says Local 2068 President John Niemiec.
Other top fundraisers include Houston, TX Local 341 with $489,981; CAL Fire
Local 2881 with $396,332; Dallax, TX Local 58 with $307,278; and Oklahoma City,
OK Local 157 with $233,108.
The funds will allow MDA to continue funding worldwide research to find
treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy and related diseases.
MDA is dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by
funding worldwide research. MDA also provides comprehensive health care and
support services, advocacy and education.
