Runners Help Heal Bodies, Hearts and Souls

November 2, 2009 – More than 86 IAFF members and family members representing 28 states and one province participated in the 34th Annual Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC to support the IAFF Burn Foundation, raising more than $93,000 – a new record.

The race weekend included a carb-filled pasta dinner at Washington, DC’s Union Station for runners, friends, families and supporters. Race day started early for the runners, and at 8:00 a.m., the more than 25,000 marathoners began the 26.2 mile journey.

Michael Lopez, a member of Winthrop, MA Local 1070, finished with a personal record of 2:58:16, and was the first male running for the Foundation to complete the course. Overall, Brother Lopez ranked 147 of the 21,325 runners who finished the race. Salem, OR Local 314 fire fighter Cory Cochran finished on the heels of Brother Lopez with a time of 3:03:26.

The top female finisher was Trisha Miller, girlfriend of Missoula, MT Local 271 member Andy Drobeck (who also ran the race), in 3:05:52, ranking 247 overall. The lone Canadian runner, Fiona Garrioch, the wife of a Brandon, MB Local 803 fire fighter, finished in 3:39:26.

The November-December issue of the International Fire Fighter magazine will include the names of all runners who raised money and ran in support of the IAFF Burn Foundation.

The 2010 Marine Corps Marathon will take place October 31, 2010. For more information about the IAFF Burn Foundation Marine Corps Marathon Team or to pre-register for the 2010 team, call (202) 824-8620 or email burnfoundation@iaff.org.
