Register for the World Police & Fire Games
June 5, 2009 – Don't miss your chance to experience the
World Police & Fire Games,
scheduled for July 31-August 9, 2009, in British Columbia, Canada. June 15 is
the last day to register without paying a $25 late fee.
More than 9,200 athletes have registered to compete in 63 sports at 40 venues
across British Columbia. This international sporting event, open to all
full-time or retired fire fighters, law enforcement and customs and correctional
officers around the world, brings together the emergency services community for
10 days of sport, comradeship and competition.
Their experience at these Games prompted Burnaby, BC Local 323 Secretary Miles
Ritchie and Local 323 member Jeff Clark to set a goal to bring the event to
British Columbia. The two wanted other fire fighters in the province and across
Canada who might not have the means or time away from their families to be able
to enjoy the camaraderie, sportsmanship and the opportunity to make lifelong
friendships at the WPFG.
Ritchie and Clark submitted a bid to host the Games to the WPFG Federation on
the Friday before the closing deadline and, to their great surprise, were told
that it was the only bid for the 2009 Games. Just days following the formal bid
presentation, the British Columbia 2009 WPFG Board went to work promote and plan
the Games.
Held biennally, the Games will next be held in New York City in 2011.
