IAFF National Children's Burn Camp Helps Teen Burn Survivors
October 3, 2008 – The IAFF Burn Foundation hosted the annual
National Children’s Burn Camp September 27-October 3 in Washington, DC.
The
trademark event, which has won accolades from the American Burn Association and
other burn organizations around the nation, was developed in partnership with
regional burn camp directors. More than 40 campers, all 13-15-year-old burn
survivors, descended on the Nation's Capitol accompanied by their burn camp
counselors -- IAFF members nominated by their respective regional burn camps and
approved by their affiliate presidents.
This week-long event allowed campers to learn about some of the
historic, cultural and political activities in Washington, DC. Sightseeing
included visits to the White House, the Capitol, Smithsonian museums, the
National Zoo, Mount Vernon and other sites.
Campers also enjoyed a special cookout at a Fort Myer, VA Local F-253 fire
station and a boat ride on the Potomac River.
All expenses for the attendees are paid by the IAFF Burn
Foundation. Several IAFF affiliates sponsor and attend events conducted during
the week. All participants are housed at the National Labor College for the
duration of this event.
This internationally recognized program was developed to give
young burn survivors the opportunity to explore Washington, DC and share their
experiences with other teens who have fought back courageously and successfully
from burn injuries.
The friendships developed last well beyond their week together.
