1, 2007 – Redlands, CA Local 1354 fire fighter Rob Sandberg, one of hundreds of
fire fighters working around the clock to contain the raging wildfires in
California, was captured in a photo that appears on the cover of the November 5
issue of Time magazine.
Sandberg was part of a five engine company strike team working
to save homes on Jupiter Lane in Green Valley Lake, California, when the picture was
taken. “It’s very strange to be one of hundreds of fire fighters fighting a
wildfire and to be the one whose picture is taken,” says Sandberg.
The Slide fire Sandberg and his team were battling was declared
fully contained on October 30 after burning nearly 12,800 acres. The fire, which
had started eight days before, destroyed 272 homes.
Fire fighters will continue to work inside the containment line
of that fire to douse hot spots. Putting the fire completely out could take days
or weeks.
The November 5 edition of Time includes an in-depth look at the
California wildfires and the emergency response. |
