Always Remember, Never Forget
On this fifth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the
IAFF offers a special tribute to remember the fire fighters who lost their lives
that day and to the families, loved ones and members who carry on.
“We will always remember the response of our members
at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and never forget the
sacrifice made by our fallen brothers,” says General President
Schaitberger.
Delegates at the IAFF 48th Biennial Convention, held
August 27-September 1 in Toronto, Ontario, voted to make September
11 a
Day of Remembrance during a
special 9/11 tribute. Each delegate received a commemorative
copy of the resolution.
In memory of the valor and selflessness displayed by
New York’s Bravest, the FDNY unveiled a memorial June 10 at New
York’s 10 House on the façade of Engine 10/Ladder 10 – which served
as a command post for rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.
The memorial is intended to honor fire fighters who fell and those
who carry on.
“Generations from now, when memories of 9/11 have
faded, people will look at this monument and know that something
terrible happened here, and then that something extraordinarily
heroic happened here when New York City fire fighters willingly
entered the burning towers and sacrificed themselves to help those
who were in peril,” said Harry Meyers, assistant chief with FDNY who
is credited with making this memorial a reality, in a speech to
Convention delegates.
