IAFF Fire Fighters Save A Life, Then Run Marathon
October 31, 2006 -- Jaime Joroff, a member of Prince George’s County, MD Local
1619, and Jason Buttinshaw, a member of Fairfax County, VA Local 2068, were
among the more than 40 IAFF members and family members from the United States
and Canada participating on the IAFF Burn Foundation Marathon Team in the 31st
Marine Corps Marathon held in Washington, DC, October 29, 2006. Just a few yards
beyond the start line, Joroff and Buttinshaw stopped to assist a runner who went
into cardiac arrest. The two fire fighter/paramedics administered Cardio
Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for R.J. Turner until U.S. Marine Corps paramedics
could reach the scene and take over treatment. Joroff and Buttinshaw then
completed the marathon. Joroff, who ran in turnout gear as part of a challenge
from a sponsor who offered to triple his donation, happened to have a portable
CPR mask in her pocket. At an emotional reunion at the hospital, Turner thanked
Joroff and Buttinshaw for saving his life and pledged $2,600 to the IAFF Burn
Foundation.
As members of the IAFF Burn Foundation Marathon Team, each runner pledged to
raise a minimum of $1,000 to support the IAFF Burn Foundation and improve the
lives of burn survivors throughout North America.
The winning time came from Robert Kuhn from Strongsville, OH Local 2882, who
crossed the finish line in 3:03:11. The fastest female runner was Nancy Kramer
from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. She finished the race in 4:13:40. Complete marathon
coverage will be published in the November-December issue of the International
Fire Fighter.
